Global threats of climate change and rising air pollution have led many experts to believe that we must transition away from carbon energy and pursue alternative energy sources. Sustainability author Scott L. Montgomery argued that nuclear power is not an option for the future but an absolute necessity, and he joined us with realities and implications for the coming decades from his new book Seeing The Light: The Case for Nuclear Power in the 21st Century. Montgomery took the stage to discuss a new era of growth in nuclear energy underway in developing nations, though not yet in the West. He highlighted new technologies enabling the nuclear power movement, and what this means for preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Scott L. Montgomery is an author, geologist, and affiliate faculty member in the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. He writes, teaches, and lectures on a wide variety of topics related to energy (geopolitics, resources, nuclear power, climate change), American politics, intellectual history, language and communication, and the history of science. He is a contributor to online journals such as The Conversation, Forbes, and Fortune, and his articles and op-eds have been featured in many outlets, including Newsweek, Marketwatch, Huffington Post, and UPI. He also gives public talks and serves on panels related to issues in global energy and their relation to political and economic trends and ideas of sustainability.
